ED are installing a brand new wave basin at the 7Waves AS headquarters in Son, Norway.

The 20×1.5m flap paddles are fitted to a new build concrete tank. The basin is designed primarily to allow testing of offshore structures destined for the North Sea.

7Waves AS is an independent Norwegian engineering company. Founded in 2012, it specializes in naval architecture and marine engineering. The firm is known for solving complex structural and hydrodynamic problems in the maritime, offshore wind, and aquaculture industries.

Edinburgh Designs are proud to have built the showpiece wave tank at the Baker Coastal Lab. Located in a basement at Stanford University, the laboratory will focus on shallow water hydrodynamics.

The glass tank features 12 linear pistons equiped with force feedback.

2 independent carriages can be run anywhere along the tank and a variable beach can be configured in varous slopes.

ED is excited to see the future research output of this newly established laboratory.

The new tank and linear piston wavemaker was built by Edinburgh Designs.

“The DTP-Lab combines a rotating table, with a water-filled pool in which gravity waves can be generated, a so-called wave flume. The motion of the water underneath the waves can be studied using a 3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) system.  The table can rotate up to 7.5 rotations per minute, allowing the effect of the Earth’s rotation, normally only apparent at large geophysical scales (10-1000 km) to be studied under laboratory conditions.”

Please note: as of July 2024, Edinburgh Designs are now in a new premises in Loanhead.

The new building is part of the Lothian School of Technology, the new venture that was masterminded by the late Stephen Salter. ED’s new facility will allow us to expand our operations and work alongside likeminded engineers.

Edinburgh Designs is pleased to announce that it is now owned by the employees through an Employment Ownership Trust. Passing the company on to our employees will ensure continuity of support for the wave machines we have installed around the world.

The company will continue to be run as before with Matthew and Douglas supporting the transfer of responsibility, making sure that our unique capability for design and build is continued.

Force based absorption ensures that the wave environment stays stable, preventing cross wave build-up and other parasitic effects.

Edinburgh Designs wave machines also remain accurate over time and continue to work well when the waves are breaking off the front of the paddles. Generating waves with a curved corner using linear wave theory leads to an unwanted wave in the tank. It is a second harmonic of the desired wave, arising when using linear theory to generate waves around a curved corner and along the paddles downstream. By adding in theoretical predictions for second order wave-paddle interactions, the spurious second harmonic is eliminated.

This is a leading edge mathematical technique that has been developed by Edinburgh Designs Mathematicians. Tests performed at: Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS)

Tests conducted with 184 x 2.2m hinge depth paddles

Back in 2013, Edinburgh Designs commissioned the world’s largest wave basin for the US Navy: the 216 paddle MASK basin.

The Khalifa University Center for Robotics and Autonomous Systems was established in 2018 to conduct pioneering research in robotics relevant to industry and society.

Edinburgh Designs and Alghanem Trading & Contracting Ltd have built a complex Robotics Environment Tank with cross flow, waves and instrumentation gantry.

The tank was completed in late 2021 and features 32×1.8m paddles in a double ended arrangement. 12 flow ducts provide flow across the width of the tank. The tank is 8m wide x 18m long x 3m deep.
